Zambia Project

Picture

In early 2023, our organization was contacted by Physical Education and Sports Teachers Association of Zambia (PESTAZ) and asked if we could help improve the quality of physical education in their country. We are more than excited about this opportunity to make a big impact in children's lives.

We have been tasked with helping:
  1. Advocate for quality physical education practices and policies with various Zambian stakeholders.
  2. Create a website for their organization.
  3. Develop national standards and grade level outcomes.
  4. Provide pedagogical training for Zambian teachers.

Physical Education in Zambia
Physical Education and Sport Teachers Association of Zambia (PESTAZ) was officially recognized in 2014 under the Ministry of Education in Zambia.

Fundraising for Short Term Goals

While our organization is not compensated for the work we do, we will need funding to accomplish some of the goals.  Funds will be allocated to project goals in order of priority (see below).

Details are subject to change based on ongoing discussions with PESTAZ.
  • 2024 Online Professional Development ($0): Presentation will focus on creating buy-in, regarding the importance of physical education and national standards and grade level outcomes,  from Zambian teachers.
  • 2024 Fall Trip #1 (cost TBD): Advocacy presentations, needs survey, national standards and grade level outcomes workshop, meeting with other Zambian non-profits, and meeting with PESTAZ members.
  • 2024 Fall Trip #2 (cost TBD): Professional development conference for leaders in Zambian physical education (based on the needs survey).
  • 2025 Equipment Fundraiser (cost TBD): We are raising money for durable, multi-use, low cost equipment. The equipment will be tied to the grade level outcomes they create.
  • Ongoing Website Support ($0): We will assist them in creating a website for their organization.
  • Documentary (cost TBD: flight, accommodations, and other expenses for film crew other than John): We will create a documentary on this experience (our previous documentary).

Support the project financially (TBD)
become a fundraiser ambassador (TBD)

Long Term Ideas

  • Ongoing Master's Project: A student in a physical education teacher education Master's program does a semester long project in Zambia. The student would serve as a teacher's aide, as well as provide professional development for the community they are placed in.
  • Ongoing Doctorate Project: A student in a physical education teacher education PhD program does a semester long project in Zambia. The student would teach a "physical education teacher education" course at the local university, advocate for appropriate educational policies, provide professional development to Zambian teachers, and help with various projects.
  • Zambian Exchange: Fund a Zambian teacher's doctorate degree at a US university. The purpose is for them to apply what they learn from the US in their own teacher preparation programs.
